John Francis Herlihy was born in June 1868 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was one of six children and the eldest son of Irish immigrants William Herlihy and Catherine Mahoney, as reported by his late daughter Esther Herlihy Dow of Napa, CA in 1980. With his first wife Amanda Rose Foster of Linn County, Kansas, John had a child in Kansas City, MO, named Mary Catherine who was born is 1894.(Unfortunately this record cannot be located). Sometime possibly as early as 1900, John and Amanda separated, and before 1913 John remarried Esther Edwards Dean, b1882 in Kansas. John and Esther had a lively family living in Oklahoma City, OK for many years. (See the links in Findagrave Memorial #65223572 for more info about that family.) John's various occupations listed in census reports include Clerk at the Magnolia Petroleum Co, and Café manager. According to his daughter Esther, John enjoyed fishing trips. By 1930 they were living in Eaton, CO, where he died in a car accident in January of 1938, and Esther died in 1956.
