DEATH OF LEGRAND ROCKWELL

This gentleman who was one of the earliest settlers of Walworth county, died at his residence in Elkhorn, on Thursday morning last, at 2am after a brief illness of Typhoid pneumonia. Mr. Rockwell came to Elkhorn in February 1837 before there was a house where the town now stands. He has been identified with the growth of the place and was widely known in this part of the state.
Mr. Rockwell came from Otsego County, New York and before coming to Elkhorn resided in Milwaukee some two years. He has been identifed with banking, as president of the Exchange bank of Elkhorn for several years and always bore the reputation among business men, of a careful judicious business man.
He was a kind neighbor, a worthy citizen and a Christian gentleman. For 28 years Mr. Rockwell has been an active working member of St. John's Episcopal church in Elkhorn and he was always foremost in every work for the upbuilding of the church. Now that he has gone he will be greatly missed by both church and sabbath school, the interest of which he held near his heart. He suffered much in his last sickness but bore all with Christian resignation. His work is done----but he leaves the bright example of a well spent life and all who knew Mr. Rockwell will cherish his memory. He has gone to the home where the many mansions are to receive the reward of his who says "come up higher". A very hard concourse of people followed his remains to their last resting place last sabbath afternoon. Peace to his memory.
