Maude was the daughter of George Washington Perkins of Washington County, Georgia, b. 24 May 1842, d. 14 Sep 1903, and Mary "Mollie" Wallace, of Burke County, Georgia, b. 30 Jul 1845, d. 18 Dec 1886.

Mrs. Hardwick was a graduate of Cox College in LaGrange, Georgia. She was a charter member of the Twentieth Century Club, the first literary club organized in Sandersville in 1908.

Maude was married to Thomas William Hardwick on 25 Apr 1894 at the Tennille Baptist Church in Washington County, Georgia.

Thomas and Maude had three daughters, only one of whom survived to adulthood, Mary, b. 6 Oct 1897, who married Dr. Frederick Bangs Rawlings.
