Mustered into the Union army at the age of 15 in the 130th New York infantry. He participated in 42 battles before being wounded at Winchester on Sept. 1864. While in the hospital, he was visited by Mary (Todd) Lincoln, who wrote a personal letter to his mother.

Married Ezilda Lodena Hart on Feb. 22, 1869 in Osage, Iowa.
