"Susan T. Minarik, businesswoman, church worker and civic activist, died Saturday. She was 52 and lived in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. Minarik was the daughter of the late Miles Lederer, former state representative, and the former Susan Scullin. She was a sister of former U.S. Rep. Raymond Lederer and Common Pleas Judge William J. Lederer. For many years, Minarik and her husband, the late Joseph R. Minarik, owned and operated MAB paint and hardware businesses in Fishtown and in Quakertown, Bucks County. When her husband died three years ago, Minarik continued to operate the firms until her recent illness. A graduate of Hallahan High School, Minarik was a member of a large family with roots deep in Fishtown's Irish-American neighborhood. She was one of those who refused to leave when the old neighborhood began changing several years ago. "She was a strong person who said what she thought but then could be counted on to do exactly as she said," recalled another of her brothers, Francis J. Lederer, former Philadelphia County chief of detectives. "She said, 'Hey, let's all work together and hold on to what we have here.' "Because of people like her there are now second-generation Hispanic neighbors who are part of Fishtown with the Irish and everyone is working together for the good of the neighborhoods." A focal point of the community intercultural involvement has been St. Michael's Church, 2nd and Jefferson streets, where Minarik was a member. She served on the church's Advisory Council for Rehabilitation and took a strong hand in supporting the priests and nuns who worked to restore and maintain the 150-year-old elementary school that was the original structure for La Salle College. "She didn't want to be out front with the titles and leadership positions," her brother said. "She just enjoyed doing the hands-on work. She was a generous woman who had many, many friends in the community." Other organizations for which she volunteered her time included the Palmer Cemetery Historical Committee, Optimists International, St. Mary Hospital Restoration Committee, the Friends of Penn Treaty Park Preservation, Hallahan High School Alumni and the St. Joseph's Prep Mothers' Club. She is also survived by a daughter, Mary Theresa; a son, Joseph M.; two sisters, Mary Malloy and Mildred Franzen; four other brothers, Miles E., Michael, Thomas and Bernard; and 42 nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Church. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Avenue above Easton Road, Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County. Friends may call from 7 to 9 tomorrow night at the Downs Funeral Home, 443 E. Girard Ave. Contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church and School."
