MEMORIES: William C. O'Flaherty---

PALMER, Maude O'Flaherty, daughter of William C. and Elizabeth O'Flaherty. Born May 5, 1904. Educated Fort Valley and Woodstock, Virginia, High Schools, George Washington University, Washington, D. C. (B. A. 1929) . Married T. Ray Palmer, June 30, 1939. Adopted son, Thomas William Palmer, died at the age of two years.
In early years, active in Epworth League of Methodist Church, South, serving as Washington District and Baltimore Conference officer. Member of Kappa Delta Sorority and Pi Lambda Theta (education sorority). Member of the HATCHET staff at G.W.U. Served in all offices of the Washington, D. C. KD Alumnae Association, twice as president. Represented Kappa Delta in the Washington Panhellenic Association, serving as Treasurer and on many committees of that organization. While serving with this group, had tea and was greeted by the First Lady, Mrs. Truman at the White House. Joined the order of the Eastern Star in 1939 and served as Worthy Matron of Joppa Lodge Chapter No. 27 in 1957, in which year was appointed as a Grand Officer of the District of Columbia. Later served on two separate occasions as Grand Representative of the D. C., OES, to outside jurisdictions.
Treasurer for several years of the George Washington University Alumnae Association.
In United Presbyterian Church, which she joined after her marriage, active in women's activities.
Her first position was secretary to a prominent engineer and architect in Washington, D. C. From 1929 until 1939 employed as secretary to the Dean of Columbian College, G.W U. June 1939 entered the Government service from which she retired February 1969 as a staff assistant. Most of her Government service was with the U. S. Public Health Service.
Maude and her husband have traveled extensively since their marriage, having visited all but one of the fifty states, Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean. She was a member of an official State Department Delegation to the Pan American Health Organization meeting, Caracas, Venezuela in 1946.
The Palmers are now residing in Winter Haven, Florida.
