Addie Mae (Holmes) Merryfield was born in Northwood, NH, in the large white house at the corner of what is now known as the 1st NH Turnpike and Green Street. As of November 2013, the house was still standing.

She had two siblings. Burton Elmer Holmes died within days of his birth. The file for her brother, Francis Lewis Holmes is #64375752. His military information (file #314827) is available at army:togetherweserved.com.

She went by "Pat", a nickname given to her by Harry Linscott, a neighbor on the Garland Road in Nottingham, because she did not like her given name.

She attended the Geebig School in Nottingham and graduated from Dover High School in June 1940. She also attended high school for a time in Groton, CT, when her father worked at Electric Boat. She attended McIntosh School of Business in Dover, NH, completing studies in 1941. She was a crack typist and stenographer.

She married first, March 9, 1942, in Littleton, ME, to Earl Rodney Adair (b. January 27, 1923, in ME, d. December 27, 2003, in ME). They were married about one year before divorcing. Pat said that he was a merchant seaman and was gone much of the time, while she was alone in rural Houlton, ME. He remarried and had eight daughters.

During World War II, Pat worked as a secretary for the government, residing in 1944 at Colorado Springs, CO.

She married second, October 27, 1946, in Roxbury (Boston), Suffolk Co., MA, Everett Harold Merryfield (b. March 3, 1927, in Franklin, NH, d. August 2, 2003, in Dover, NH).

She worked 1950-51 as a secretary in Dover, NH, at Seavey Hardware. She also pelted mink at Jeffrey's Mink Farm in Northwood, NH, and worked as a waitress at the former Krazy Kone at the Lee Traffic Circle, the Route 125 Restaurant in Lee, and at the Oakdale Restaurant in Northwood, NH.

Pat and Everett Merryfield rented for a few years in Northwood, NH, before building a house next to her parents on Route 4 in Nottingham, NH. They resided in Nottingham until 1973 and moved permanently in 1977 to Kissimmee, FL, after being "snow birds" for three previous winters. They removed to Lady Lake, FL, in October 1987, and also resided at Groveland, Minneola, and Eustis, FL, before returning to NH in 1999. They finally relocated to the Lilac Estates mobile home park in Rochester, NH.
