Obituary: Everett Harold Merryfield, 76, of 7 South Dewberry [Lane], died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born March 3, 1927, in Franklin, [NH] he was the son of Charles Harold Merryfield and Alice Spaulding. He was formerly of Nottingham and moved to Florida for 25 years, before moving back to Rochester, where he had lived for the past four years.

On Oct. 27, 1946, he married his wife of 56 years, Addie Mae (Holmes) Merryfield.

He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served his country during the World War II, while aboard the USS Cunningham.
He worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 26 years. He worked at the prison at the shipyard through the Special Services.

He was a member of the American Legion for 59 years. He was a current member of the Dover Post No. 8 and served as department vice commander of District 3 in 1965. He was also a member of the Elk's Lodge serving as past exalted ruler of the Kissimmee, Fla., Lodge from 1980 to 1981 and also as past exalted ruler in Dover from 2001 to 2002.
He was also a member of the Morrison Masonic Lodge in Northwood, where he served as 32nd degree past master and a 42-year member of the Eastern Star.

He enjoyed RV-ing with his wife, golfing and gardening. He was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Addie Mae; one son, Jay Kevin Merryfield of Rochester; two daughters, Jenifer Guptill and her husband, Clyde of Barrington, and Brenda Elliott and her husband, Carl of Rochester; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Everett Harold Merryfield was also known as "Jack" Merryfield. His father, Harold Merryfield, often went by the name Charles and was also known as "Jack". Therefore, when young, Everett was known as "Little Jack".

He was a Plank Holder for the U.S.S. Alfred A. Cunningham, DD752 Frank Knox Class, 3rd Fleet (Metalsmith) during WWII. The Cunningham set sail November 23, 1944.

After leaving miltary service, he worked as a plumbing apprentice for Lord & Goodwin Plumbing & Heating, Meredith, NH (May 1946-Apr 1947); as a painter for Charles Gardner & Son, Northwood, NH (April 1947-September 1947); as a woodsman with his father-in-law, Elmer Holmes (in 1947); as a dry-cleaning spotter at the American Dye House, Dover, NH; and in the meat department of First National (Grocery) Store, Dover, NH.

He worked at the U.S. Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, NH, April 1, 1943 to May 30, 1944, and from 1950 to 1973. He retired as Supervisor, Recreation Services.

In 1973, he and his wife Pat became "snowbirds", spending their winters in Kissimmee, FL. While in NH, he worked at Rudy Goodreau's RV / Airstream, Plaistow, NH (1973-1977). In 1977, they relocated to FL and he worked for Parks Furniture / Greens Fuel & Gas Svc., Kissimmee (1977-1987). In 1987, they relocated to Lady Lake, FL, and he worked at Rainbow RV, Leesburg, FL (1987-1988).

After leaving Lady Lake, they resided in Minneola, Eustis, Groveland, and Kissimmee, FL, before returning to NH in 1999, and residing briefly in Dover. They last resided together at the Lilac Estates Mobile Home Park in Rochester, NH.

Note: There is an error on his cemetery marker. He never served in the Korean Conflict and was not in the U.S. Navy at that time.
