John Cranston was born in Sept 1874 in Lyn, Ontario. His parents were John Washburn and Sarah (Smith) McCrady. In 1894 he married Florence Clow and they had six children, two of whom died in infancy. In 1905, the family moved to the Prairie Rose district northeast of Jansen, Saskatchewan, Canada and homesteaded. In 1908, he won the contract to build Horton School which he completed in 1909. In about 1910, John and his family sold their farm and moved back to Ontario.

In Lyn, Ontario John owned and operated the General Store for many years. Florence died in 1927. He married three more times, but had no more children. John died in Lyn, Ontario in Dec. 1965 at the age of 91.
