ALENE LOUISE HOLDEN

Alene Louise Holden, 86, of Bullhead City, Az., passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2005.

Graveside services were held on Monday, Feb. 28, at Pleasant Point Cemetery in Lillian, with the Rev. Johnny Caster officiating.

Alene was born to Zelma and Bushrod Thompson in Venus, on Sept. 21, 1918, one of four children. She was married to C.B. "Jack" Polk in 1943. Mr. Polk passed away in 1968 after 25 years of marriage. She then married Howard Holden in 1970 and they were married just over 33 years. Alene made her home in several states over the years: Texas, New Mexico, California and finally, Arizona. She loved her native state of Texas and always dreamed of returning. She was an avid reader, and loved television as well. She was never a joiner, or a traveler, but preferred to focus her attention and creativity on her home rather than outside activities. She was a tireless and devoted wife, mother and friend with a loving heart. Mrs. Holden"extended her hand to the poor. Yes, she reached out her hands to the needy. She did not eat the bread of idleness." (Proverbs 31:20 and 31:27). Truly, she was a blessing to all who knew her.

Mrs. Holden began work as a long-distance operator in Plainview during the 1930's. She interrupted her career when her daughter was born in 1945, electing to concentrate on her home and family until 1958, when she returned to work for Southern Bell Telephone in Hobbs, NM. She continued to work in basically the same capacity her entire career, retiring from the Federal Government's General Services Administration in Bakersfield, CA, in the 1970's, where she had served as a GSA switchboard operator and then supervisor of the Federal Building's switchboard for approx. 10 years.

Mrs. Holden is survived by her husband, Howard T. Holden of Bullhead City, AZ; daughter, Patricia L. Polk of Olathe, Kansas; step-sons, Happy Holden and family of Hamden CT.; Jolly Holden and family of Marietta, GA; step-daughters, Lanna K. Richards and family of Plano; Gaye Holden-Petrini and family of Hollywood, FL; Honey Charles and family of Lihue, HI; Melodye Dabney and family of Eugene, OR; sister, Mozelle Wimp of Bedford; brother, W.D. Thompson and family of Tigard, OR.; 12 step-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
