Services for Muriel R. Backus, 88, of North
Jefferson St., Mexico, who died Sunday, Feb. 25, at Pontiac Nursing Home, Oswego, were held Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Harter-Olmstead Funeral Home. Spring burial will be in Mexico Village Cemetery. A native of Napanee, Ontario, Mrs.
Backus moved to the Minetto area in 1910 and
lived briefly in the Syracuse area before moving to Mexico in 1937. She was a stenographer and bookkeeper with the Mexico Lumber and Coal Co. and previously was employed with O.K. Manufacturers of
Oswego. Her husband, Jay, died in 1957. Mrs. Backus was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mexico and a life member and past matron of Victoria Chapter 205, OES. She also was a member of the New Century Club of Mexico and served as a Girl Scout leader in Mexico for many years. Surviving are three sisters, Luella Fadden
and Iolene Uings, both of Minetto, and Lois
Smith of Oswego; a brother, Carl Rombough of Miami; and several nieces and nephews.
