The many friends of Mr. Spencer Christman will be pained to learn of his death early yesterday morning, and will join with his surviving relatives in revering his memory.

Spencer Christman was born in the town of Root, Montgomery county, January 1822. His parents, Martin and Sally Christman were in humble circumstances and the son had but limited opportunity for attending school.

At an early age he began to earn a livelihood and aided in the support of the family.

In 1845 he married Miss Nancy Weaver of Carlisle, who died in 1900.

Shortly after his marriage Mr. Christman removed to this town and about 1848 purchased the farm where he died and which he owned till three years ago, when he sold it to his son, W. W. Christman, with whom he has since had his home.

Mr. Christman had four children: Henry, Ambrose, Carrie and William W of whom only the last survives.

Mr. Christman was a Republican in politics having affiliated with that party almost from its inception. He had held various town offices, among others being that of assessor, and that of highway commissioner.

For about forty years he had been a member of the Christian church of this village.

Mr. Christman was physically robust and retained his strength and mental faculties till long past the allotted age of three score and ten, and, until past eighty took an active part in the farm work.

Three years ago his health began to fail, though the decline was not marked until about one and a half years ago. Since March last, his illness has been more severe, though he maintained his mental faculties until a few weeks prior to his death.

His integrity, his sterling Christian character and his kindliness of heart won for him from a wide circle of acquaintances, a place not easily filled.

The funeral services will be held on Friday, the Rev. S. W. Potter officiating, interment at Grove cemetery, Quaker Street, NY.

Quaker Street Review, July 23, 1908

Note: Spencer and Nancy Christman are the parents of the famous poet and author William W. Christman who lived in Duanesburg NY and created the Christman Sanctuary.
