LAKELAND - Joseph Alton Mayo died on February 15, 2013 from complications of dementia. He was 87 years old.
Joe was born in Greenville, NC on January 24, 1926 to WJ and Bessie Mayo. His family moved to Plymouth, NC where at Plymouth High School, he excelled in basketball, baseball and football, and was Senior Class President. He attended the University of NC before joining the NROTC. He was sent to Newberry College and the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He graduated from USC as an Ensign in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS El Dorado in the Pacific until 1947.
After his discharge from the Navy, Joe started his career in the retailing business. In 1949, he moved to Atlanta, GA where he worked at Davison's Department Store and then as a sales representative for Joseph Kaplan. He moved his family to Lakeland in 1960 to become a partner, and eventually sole owner of Ross of Florida. He closed the business and retired in 2000.
Joe was a member of United Methodist Temple from 1960 to 2008, where he taught Junior and Senior High Sunday School classes. He then was confirmed in the Episcopal Church and joined All Saints' Episcopal Church.
He was an active volunteer for Lakeland Habitat for Humanity from 1990 until his health failed 18 months ago. He also volunteered for Read Lakeland and the Share Program at Methodist Temple.
Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy K Mayo.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Pettit Mayo and his daughters, Suzanne Mayo of Jacksonville, Anne Girata (Dan) of Lakeland; his grandson, Chris Girata (Nicole) of Memphis, TN, and his granddaughter, Nancy Reynolds (Matthew) of Lakeland. Also surviving is his sister, Ann Allred of High Point, NC. He leaves five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family is deeply grateful for the loving care of Comfort Keepers, Good Shepherd Hospice and Clare Bridge Dementia Care Center.
