Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company F, 95th New York Volunteer Infantry on October 15, 1861. Promoted first to Major (March 6, 1862) then Colonel and commander of the unit (October 9, 1863), he commanded the regiment at the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg when Colonel George H. Biddle went down with a wound that ultimately forced the end of his field service. Colonel Pye led his troops through General Ulysses S. Grant's Spring 1864 Overland Campaign, and participated in the ill-fated Union charge at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia on June 2, 1864. Severely wounded in the neck in the charge, he lingered for a number of days before succumbing to his injuries.
