Jerry was the oldest of four siblings and thus clearly "older brother". His sister, Lucille, was not much younger. They dearly loved each other, were like two peas in a pod: same facial expressions, set of the mouth and each quite certain they were right. Neither would give in to the other or let the other tell them what to do.
One day as kids, Jerry was squatted down using a hatchet. Lucille came up behind him and peered over his shoulder. He told her to move. She would not. He raised the hatchet anyway and nicked her forehead. She carried a little scar from that encounter for the rest of her life.
Family get togethers were always great fun, particularly as his two girls were just a bit younger than Lucille's two daughters. As Jerry and Lucille were like two peas in a pod, family recollections were invariably same story, different narrative.
One they could agree on was when the family lived on a houseboat in Stockton, California. Jerry was fishing off the side. He got a strong bite and started to slip over overboard. Lucille and little brother Burt grabbed him by the legs to save him but were not strong enough to pull him in. Their mother came running yelling to let him go. Lucille and Burt were mightily confused. Couldn't she see that they were saving their older brother? What they didn't realize was that his head was under water. They finally let go but no problem, the water was only a foot or so deep. Thereafter Jerry had to do his fishing down the toilet.
Jerry was a very skilled and successful cabinet maker who operated his own business from a workshop behind the house. He made the cabinets for Lucille's remodeled kitchen in the 1960's.
He loved fishing and duck hunting. He died on his last fishing trip. Reportedly his last words: "What a nice string of fish".

Marysville. -- Services were today for Gerald H. Dampier of Los Altos, who died Sunday of a heart attack while on a fishing trip with his son. He was 73.
Mr. Dampier, a native of San Jose, was semi-retired from his cabinet making business. He had been in this trade most of his life, having started work with his father at an early age.
Surviving are his wife, Jean, whom he married 47 years ago; a son [...] and daughter, Jeri Schruber, also of Los Altos; another daughter, June Dampier of Monterey; a sister, Lucille Michie of Santa Rosa; and six grandchildren.
Internment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, San Jose.
