HAYES — Stephen Philip Stafford, a 41-year resident of Gloucester, died at his home on Sunday, April 22, 2001. Son of the late Stephen Barton and Helen Richardson Stafford, as well as great-nephew to Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, he was 86. Mr. Stafford began his career in 1939 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, retiring in 1980 as a design engineer consultant. He attended Hebron Academy, Hebron, Maine, and Worcester Polytech Institute in Massachusetts. Philip was a 40-year member of the James River Hunt Club and Master of Hounds, serving several terms as president. In addition, he was an avid horseman, having taught riding lessons in Hampton for many years. Also, he was an avid fox hunter and promoted both sports through his teaching. He was a member of Abingdon Episcopal Church, participating in the adult choir and was a former warden. Immediate survivors include his wife of 60 years, Clara Fisher Stafford; one daughter, Anne Marple Stafford McCann and her husband, Robert, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; two sons, Samuel Philip Stafford, also of Kill Devil Hills, and John Barton Stafford of Hayes. A funeral service, was conducted by the Rev. Josephine A. Taylor, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Abingdon Episcopal Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
