Columbus was born in Knox County shortly before his parents moved to Union County in 1848.
Columbus bought 23 acres from his parents in district 6, Leesburg Township and built a house. Later he purchased 60 acres in Taylor Township and lived there until the spring of 1882 when he moved to Washington County, Iowa. Here he bought and farmed 200 acres of land. In February 1894 he returned to Union County and bought 40 acres in Dover Township. In 1903 he moved to Putnam County, Ohio and worked in a creamery. Later he bought property in Lima, Ohio and worked as a painter and interior decorator.
Columbus compiled the first Hildreth genealogy from family records and interviews. This was the basis for the work that Allen Sheneman compiled for his book. He wrote at the end of that short genealogy, "Now I don't know whether you can get any notes worthy of historical mention from what I have written or not, but what I would like to know is where do we connect into the chain. Grandfather (William Hildreth II) came from Connecticut as I have always been told, but I fail to find so far the connecting Link."
