Doris Evelyn Stevens

Doris Evelyn Stevens, 95, of Martinsville passed from this life at 12:50 a.m. on Thursday, January 20th, 2011 at Grandview Healthcare in Martinsville.

She was born on August 16, 1915 in Monroe County, Indiana, to the late John C. and Laura Florence (Baker) Hale.

On October 22, 1934 she married Lotus W. "Peely" Stevens. He preceded her in death on June 17, 2006.

Doris moved to Martinsville in 1955 from Gosport, Indiana, where she spent her childhood and graduated high school. She was a member of Liberty Christian Church in Martinsville and a past member of the Martha Belle Homemakers Club.

Throughout the 1960's she worked at the JCPenney Department Store in Martinsville. During the later part of the 60's and throughout the 1970's, for nearly 15 years, she was a cook in the cafeteria at the Martinsville Junior High School.

She enjoyed sewing and dancing, and most importantly she found her greatest pleasure in her family and friends.

Doris will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Janet L. (Mike) Baugh of Martinsville and Judy M. (Dale) Marlin of Ellettsville; one sister, Mary F. Wilson of Plainfield; five grandchildren, Julie Hart, Steve Marlin, Kevin & Kyle Baugh and Erin Huang; four great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of nearly 72 years, Lotus "Peely" Stevens; four sisters, Virginia Sanders, Myrle Anderson, Vance Anderson and America Jane Hale; and four brothers, Bruce, Charles, Virgil and David Hale.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Saturday, January 22nd from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center. Rev. Stephen Johnson will officiate a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 12 Noon on Saturday at the funeral home. A graveside service and burial will be in Gosport Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22nd.
