Born in Leominster, Massachusetts, the son of the late Walter Wood and Leona (Burchstead) Wood, he was raised and educated in Leominster. Following his graduation, he joined the United States Air Force where he served four years at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado as a staff sergeant.
Following his discharge, he attended both Lowell Technical Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a certificate in electrical engineering. He worked many years at Sylvania and retired from Raytheon where he was employed as a missile systems engineer on the development of the Patriot Missile.
An avid gardener, he liked to tinker with mechanical projects. He was a member of the Raytheon Softball team as a pitcher. Mr. Wood loved spending time with his grandchildren and was often heard saying, "Wood is Good!"
He is survived by three sons; Steven Wood of Peabody; Jeffrey Wood of Lynnfield; and Mark Wood of Pepperell; and two daughters; Patricia Paciulli and her husband Anthony of Marblehead; and Pamela Wood of Peabody. He is also survived by two step children; Dawn Rhodes and her husband Steve of South Carolina; and Linda Beaulieu of Townsend; and their mother Patricia (Bealieau) Wood of Peabody. In addition, he is also survived by two brothers; Donald Wood and his wife Inez of Lutz, Florida; and Barr Wood of Pinellas Park, Florida; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be on Friday, February 12 at 2:00 PM at Winchendon National Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Thursday evening in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal Street, Salem, MA, from 4PM to 8Pm. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution may make it to Project Linus P.O.
