Richard Eugene "Dick" Kaufman, age 81, of Elderton, PA, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 18, 1931 in Hooversville, Somerset County, PA, the son of Carl Raymond Kaufman and Mary Susan (Koontz) Kaufman.

Dick lived in Somerset County during his youth and graduated from Conemaugh Twp. High School in Davidsville in 1948. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from the California State Teacher's College in California, PA, and later earned his Master's Degree from Kent State University. Dick honorably served his country as a member of the US Army during the Korean War era and after returning, became the Industrial Arts teacher at Elderton High School. He held that position from 1955 until January of 1993, and he loved having a job that allowed him to invest in the lives of local youth. Dick's dedication to the students was evident, and he was a finalist for the 1974 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year award.

A true outdoorsman, Dick enjoyed fishing, boating and camping with his family; he also built several homes in the Elderton area. His hobbies included working with model trains and, after earning his pilot's license in 1980, flying classic planes. When Dick retired from teaching in 1993, he began to build and fly numerous radio-controlled model airplanes. He was a member of many local organizations that were related to his interests, including the Indiana County Model Railroad Club, Experimental Aircraft Association, Indiana Flyers Club, 268 Flyers Club and Murrysville Area RC Club.

Despite his many interests, faith and family were paramount in his life. He served as a deacon at Plumcreek Church of the Brethren for many years, and also taught Sunday school for many years and the AWANA Youth Club for the past two years. Dick loved spending time with his wife, son, daughter and grandchildren, and they will always remember his selfless nature and caring spirit.

His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Audrey Lucille (Ashbrook) Kaufman, whom he married June 13, 1953; son, Richard Mark Kaufman and wife, Heather, of Lancaster; daughter, Leslie Sue Kaufman Easler and husband, Sylvan, of Butler; and grandchildren, Sylvan Benjamin Easler, Aaron Kaufman Easler, Matthew Mark Kaufman, Andrew Richard Kaufman and Katelyn Anne Kaufman.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, John Wesley Kaufman.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Clark Chapel of the Bauer Funeral Home, Inc., 238 S. Main Street, Elderton.

Additional visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the Plumcreek Church of the Brethren, 3087 Dutch Run Rd., Shelocta, with the Rev. Randy Derck officiating.

Burial will be in Kaufman Cemetery, Davidsville, Pennsylvania.

Contributions may be made in Dick's honor to the Plumcreek Church of the Brethren, 3087 Dutch Run Rd., Shelocta, PA 15774.
