Cause: Low level mission to destroy Rumanian Oil Fields Ploesti.Burning debris, hurled upward by bomb explosions and secondary explosions, caused damage among many of the attacking aircraft. Mcgraw's aircraft was hit by debris and fires started in the bomb bay. It rapidly spread to the wings, and then an engine failed. The pilot attempted a crash-landing near Foresti, south of Ploesti.

Attempted crash landing. 4 crew survived the landing , later the pilot (McGraw) and tail gunner died due to severe burns in a Rumanian hospital. Aircraft and crew was on loan from 389th BG to the 98BG.
