Victoria Hunter Sanders, Ed.D., 77, went home to be with the Lord on November 5, 2007 following a brief illness. She was born December 6, 1929, in Hollywood, CA, the daughter of William Logan Hunter and Alma MacLean Hunter. Vickie's early life was filled with both glamor and excitement, as her father moved the family from Beverly Hills to Calaveras County when he got the urge to search for gold and went into mining. They later settled in Stockton in time for Vickie to graduate from Stockton High School in 1947. Her childhood experiences in the Gold Country were never too distant, playing an important part in her life as she became a noted educator and published author.
Vickie was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lawrence P. Sanders, in 2004. The love they shared was only surpassed by the love each of them held for Jesus Christ. During their forty-year marriage, they played an important part in the lives of local churches, most of it at First Baptist Church. Vickie always served her church with love, compassion and dedication, filling roles from church moderator to teacher. She continued teaching the adult New Beginnings Sunday School class she and Larry had led for over thirty years until her illness. Vickie obtained the majority of her graduate education from University of Pacific, culminating with her Ed.D. in 1979. Beginning in 1949, she taught at various schools in San Rafael and San Joaquin County before she began her long-term association with Stockton Unified School District. She retired from SUSD as a Master Teacher. She also served as Director of Academic Skills Center at UOP. She was the author of two California history books{co-authored: "Sails to Rails: Sailing Ships, Stagecoaches and Trains That Opened Up California" with Edith T. Hurd, Elizabeth Hamma & Norris Ewing} and several KVIE Television series for elementary children. She also wrote numerous professional articles. Her latest book The Gold Bug And Me, based on her own childhood, is pending publication. In addition to her book, Vickie had an amazing number of ongoing projects. They ranged from a novel to a key role in the Stockton-San Joaquin Parkinson's Disease Support Group, to a continuing series of articles for the San Joaquin Medical Society. She also led a weekly discussion group that studied a variety of contemporary Christian works. As one close friend said, Vickie was always looking for new challenges in life. Her wisdom and judgment influenced untold lives in so many ways. During her final days, friends and family continued to learn new things from each other about her life and how much she meant to each of us. Her granddaughter Virginia said, Grandma taught me to be brave, courageous and never quit-she gave me words of wisdom and encouragement. These words are a common thread for each of us as we remember Vickie.
She is survived by her son, William Paul Sanders and his wife Renee of Hawthorne, New Jersey; grandson Paul Sanders; granddaughter Heather Sanders and her husband, Samuel Rucker; granddaughter Virginia Marshall and her husband Jeff; cousin Elmer Brownell of Canada and his family; her stepdaughters Karen Watts and Lorrie Stuckey and their families; and by six great-grandchildren. Her sister-in-law Betty Marie Osterdock of Mesa, AZ; niece Cindy Frantz and nephew Dennis Osterdock of Rathdrum, Idaho and their families will miss her also.
Visitation will be Monday, November 12, 2007, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wallace Martin Funeral Home. Vickie will be buried 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Linden Cemetery. A celebration of her life will follow at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 3535 N. El Dorado Street, Stockton.
