Ophelia "Birdie" Crosby Harwood was elected mayor of Marble Falls in 1917, the first woman elected to that office in Texas, and one of the first in the nation to precede the acquisition of the vote by women. She was a popular public figure in whose term many improvements and modernizations to the town were accomplished.
