She kept the home fires burning while her husband served in Company A, 7th Florida Infantry, during the civil war. He survived and returned a ragamuffin unrecognizable to his children.
About 1870 the family migrated by ship to Texas, surviving a hurricane on the way, and is found in the 1870 Bell County, Texas, census. Thereafter the family moved to Uvalde, Texas.
She came to California with her husband when several of their sons left Texas, ending up living with her son Oliver Milton Dampier in San Jose, California.
She became estranged from her husband sometime in the 1890's. In an 1898 letter from San Jose to daughter Frances in Texas she writes "your pa is in los anges he never sends me any money not a nickle but I can live with out it". Unbeknownst to the family he returned to family in Georgia, living with his brother, Chief of Police Calvin Dampier in Valdosta who notified the California family when he died in 1909.
