Dean Bowen, 78, of Canadian Shores, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at his home. Born Oct. 5, 1934, in Scipio, he was the son of Melvin M. and Neoma Ruth Key Bowen. He attended schools in Stuart and graduated from Stuart High School. He then joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after nine years of service. He married Kathryn Ragan on Jan. 17, 1956, in McKinney, Texas. He worked for Jack Walls in the plumbing business for two years before going to work at the United States Naval Ammunition Depot. He worked at the McAlester ammunition depot for 25 years and worked in explosives as an operation foreman and supervisor. He was of the Free Will Baptist faith. He was a scout master in Indianola Troop No. 242 and was the founder of the volunteer fire department of Canadian Shores. He was also a civil defense director. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Bowen, of Canadian Shores; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Debbie, of Holdenville, Tim and Donna Bowen, of McAlester, and Steve Bowen and fiancee, Cindy Flanagan, Alvin, Texas. Also, three grandchildren, Eli and Jennifer Bowen, Kristina Bowen and Katelyn Bowen, and two great-grandchildren, Haidyn Bowen and Kaylee Bowen. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Alicia Bowen. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church in Indianola with the Rev. Fred Morrison officiating. Burial will be at Lone Grove Cemetery in Scipio. Military honors will be provided by Robert B. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 1098. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Pallbearers will be William Stacey, Danny Williams, John Shirley, Sonny Bowen, Daniel Morrison and Keith Major. Honorary pallbearers will be Elbert Stacey, Johnny O'Neal, Preston Johnson and Charley Eldridge.
