Lawrence W. Smith was the son of Elias and Sarah Smith. Mr. Smith married Ellen Mowry October 26, 1885 in Blackstone, Massachusetts. At the time of their marriage, he was 65, she 37, and his third wife. She was the daughter of Ulysses and Sylvia Mowry and was born in Smithfield, RI.

"The funeral services of Lawrence Smith were held at his late home, conducted by L. F. Cabot of Windsor, and Revs. C. O. Gill and O. D. Clapp officiating, with interment in Ascutney cemetery at Windsor. Mr. and Mrs. Smith purchased the William Sumner house seven years ago and had made their home in Hartland. During that time, Mr. Smith had been in feeble health, and the past year helpless. He was tenderly cared for by his devoted wife, Ellen G. Smith. Mrs. Mary Smith of Ogontz, Penn., and son, Justin of Scranton, and Mr. and Mrs. Latham of Providence, R. I. were called here by the death of Mr. Smith." From the Vermont Journal, September 14, 1907.

Mr. Smith served in the 17th Connecticut Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted on August 8, 1862. His rank was Private. He mustered in on Aug. 28, 1862 in Co. F of the 17th Connecticut. He mustered out Jan. 30. 1863. His discharge was due to disability and he was discharged to Norwalk, CT.
