The great event in colored society during the week is the announced marriage of Miss Octavia Miles of this place to Joshua Lucas of Irwin

June 21, 1900
Joshua Lucas through his attorney filed suit Saturday for a divorce from his wife, Belle Lucas on charges of unfaithfulness and gross neglect of duty. The couple were married on Aug 10, 1889 and the following children have been born: Clarence, Homer, Ralph and Chester, aged 11, 8, 7, and 4 years. Plaintiff says that on Feb 16, 1898 his wife deserted him, taking their son Ralph with her and has never returned to live with him. Plaintiff further says that during the months of Jan and Feb, 1898, defendant committed adultery in Mechanicsburg with one Jesse Phillips and several times between Mechanicsburg and Milford Center. Mr Lucas alleges that he has always been true and faithful and provided his wife with the necessaries of life and a comfortable home. Plaintiff thinks that the above charges are sufficient to grant a divorce and custody of all the children.

Married Rosella Martin, 1901

Joshua Lucas, colored, has filed suit in the Madison county courts for $15,000 damages against Max Sonzisky of East St Louis Ill for the death of his wife, Mrs Bell H Lucas on Oct 21 which occurred when the Sonzisky auto struck the machine in which Mrs Lucas was riding on the National Pike north of London. Mrs Lucas was on her way to the home of Mrs Lucy Beach near the scene of the accident to assist Mrs Beach in preparation for her annual trip south for the winter and was riding in the Beach auto. The accident occurred at the intersection of the National Pike and London Marysville Road and suffered a broken neck, dying instantly.

Sept 23, 1926
Age and experience are not barriers to those inclined to marriage Joshua Lucas, 68 and 5 times previously married, was granted a license to wed Octavia Calloway, 53, twice married, her married name being Filer .

Sept 24, 1929
After an investigation carried on until a late hour, Coroner Armpriester announced that he would hold Joshua Lucas, his wife Octavia and the formers son Chester Lucas to the grand jury. No charge should be placed against the trio, but bonds would be set, it is within the right of the coroner to hold a party to the jury without placing a specific charge against them. ... failed to bring enough evidence to charge the trio with the murder of Homer Lucas whose body was found in a well in Mechanicsburg Sunday morning. It is also reported that he would ask the county commissioners to offer a reward for the capture of the person who killed him. Officials are sure Lucas was murdered before being placed in the well on the George Harness property. In the meantime, he was contemplating whether to issue a burial permit on the body. Arrangements for funeral were being held up pending the release or incarceration of the three. Five were quizzed at last nights inquest and a third was in jail today for further investigation. The third party is Mrs Octavia Lucas, 60, step mother. The 2 others are Joshua Lucas, father and husband of Octavia, and Chester Lucas, 33, brother. Officials expressed opinion that one or more has knowledge of the death. The step mother admitted she had said to a neighbor "I would wade in blood to my neck before I would let Homer come to my house". By "her house" she meant the home of Joshua Lucas which is located half block from the Harness property. Just next door to the property is the home which Homer Lucas owned. During the questioning of Mrs Lucas and others, it became very apparent that there was a feeling of antimosity between the step mother and Homer. It was brought out that trouble arose between Homer and his step mother following the marriage to Joshua Lucas in September, 1926. George Harness who found the body in the well said it would have been impossible for Homer to crawl into the well unassisted and then replace the covering. "Homer was a fine boy" Harness said "There was none better". Harness said he learned of Homers disappearance last Tuesday and helped in the search for him. Mrs Jessie Crosby, a neighbor, said Mrs Lucas made the remarks that "she wished Homer was in Hell".

Sept 27, 1929
...The coroner granted a burial permit for Homer Lucas. Arrangements were hastily completed and services held on the same afternoon. A large number of friends were in attendance and the casket was surrounded by many beautiful floral tributes. Mr and Mrs Joshua Lucas and Chester Lucas who are held in the county jail were not permitted to attend the service.

Oct 21, 1929
Joshua Lucas and his wife Octavia were freed from the county jail this morning when the Oct Grand Jury failed to bring an indictment in the death of Homer Lucas. A 3rd member, Chester Lucas, is still being held. A charge of burglary was placed against him but the burglary charge is only a move to keep Lucas in custody since officials are sure he knows more about the death of his brother than he has admitted.
