John G. Hazlett July 20, 1924-August 27, 2008, A funeral service for John G. Hazlett, 84, of Newark, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church.
Rev. Barbara Sholis officiating. The burial will be in New Lexington Cemetery. Mr. Hazlett died Aug.27, 2008, at Autumn Healthcare. He was born July 20, 1924, in Newark, to the late Ira I. and Ruby F. (Garlinger) Hazlett. Mr. Hazlett was a 1942 graduate of Newark High School and a 1949 graduate of Miami University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and saw action at the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded two Bronze Stars.
Mr. Hazlett worked for the John J. O'Neill Co. in the development of Southgate in Heath. He was chief of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for a time and retired from the city of Newark, where he had been deputy auditor. Mr. Hazlett was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church in Newark. He was active in the Licking County Republican Party and served on the Central and Executive committees. He was a member of Moundbuilders Country Club. As class historian and secretary for the Newark High School Class of 1942, he organized many class reunions. He was a founding member of the NHS Rebounders Club and was inducted as an honorary member of the NHS Hall of Fame in 2007.
An active member of the Licking County Historical Society, he was named 2008 Historian of the Year and a lifetime trustee. He is survived by a sister, Jean H. Maddocks, of Newark; niece, Elizabeth M. "Beth" (Tom) Beattie, of Newark; grandnieces, Emily B. (Darren) Demaree, of Columbus, and Laura J.
Beattie, of Charleston, S.C.; grand-nephew, John R. Beattie, of Newark; and longtime friend, Dr. Henry L. Hook, of Newark. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m.
Saturday at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta Funeral Cremation Service, 59 N. Fifth St. Memorial contributions may be made to the Licking County Historical Society or to Newark High School's "A Call to College." Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
