Army Sgt Maugans was assigned to 710th Explosive Ordnance Detachment, San Diego, California. Maugans, an ordnance disposal specialist, was one of four U.S. servicemen killed while disposing of explosives near Kandahar.

Jamie graduated from Derby High School and attended the University of Kansas and Cowley County Community College before joining the Army. He was not married and had no children. "He was a gentle man, from the time he was born. He was very sweet and kind," said his grandmother. The family last heard from Jamie in an e-mail on Easter, in which he said he'd be home in a month. "He was hoping to go out and have a beer or two with me — I was looking forward to that," his father said.

The way in which the soldiers died made identification of all of the remains difficult. Those that were identified are being buried in individual graves in the soldiers' home states. Commingled remains of the soldiers were interred in a single joint grave in Section 60, Site 7757 in Arlington.
