William (Bill) Thurman McDonald, age 88, passed away February 12, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City. He was born at the Miners Hospital in Park City, Utah on April 20, 1924, the son of Lyndon and Bernice Buhler McDonald.
Bill attended two years of school in Heber City, then the family moved to Talmage, Utah where he finished grade school and went on to graduate from Altamont High School. After graduation he worked at the Arms Plant in Salt Lake City until he entered the U.S. Army on March 21, 1943. He did his basic training at Camp Bowie, Texas.
While on furlough, he met and married his lifelong sweetheart, Shirley Alexander. He was then sent to Japan and after his tour of duty was honorably discharged. Bill and Shirley made their home in Salt Lake City. He worked as a glass glazier for W.P. Fuller and later with George's Glass until he retired. His greatest joy was his family. He loved to fish, hunt, and get together with family and friends.
Bill is survived by Shirley, his wife of 69 years, four children, Lynn of Mesquite, NV; Shauna Bergen of Salt Lake City, Utah; Leslie Miner of Salt Lake City, Utah and Richard (Susan) of Salt Lake City, Utah; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren; sister Rhea M. Dump, Rapid City, SD. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Evan and Patrick, and sister Helen in infancy.
The memory of Bill will always be in our hearts. He will be remembered for his ready smile while singing and whistling our favorite tunes throughout our lives.
Visiting with family and friends will take place at Evans and Early Mortuary (574 E. 100 So, SLC, 801-355-5323) on Saturday, February 23, 2013, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm followed by interment at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Online condolences maybe shared with the family at www.evans-earlymortuary.com.
