His father Captain James Bird was the first commander of the Liberty Guards formed at Taylors Creek Just before the war. He was unable to serve in the war due to debility and old age.
Israel L. Bird enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private in Capt. Hughes' Company of the 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 25 April 1862.
After the war, Israel L. was responsible for the reorganization of the Liberty County Militia, "The Constitution Guards" in the late 1870's. He was selected as Captain and Commander, serving in the unit until about 1900. He died in 1905.
