Lewis Edgar "L.E." Sanders

1923 — 2012

Lewis Edgar Sanders, age 89, passed away in Bakersfield on June 27. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 3, 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Tehachapi, 1049 S. Curry St., with a viewing from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will follow at the Tehachapi Public Cemetery - Eastside.

Lewis was born in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas, on June 4, 1923. His parents were Lewis Edgar Sanders Sr. and Myrtle Watkins. He came to the Wasco area as a young boy with his family as part of the "Dust Bowl" migration to California. He attended school there before joining the Navy in 1942. He served on the heavy cruiser, the USS Portland, in the Battle of the Pacific in WWII and saw much combat action. He enjoyed telling and retelling stories of those experiences to any and all who would listen.

Following WWII, he moved to the Tehachapi area and began farming with his brother Grady, and lived there for the remainder of his life. He later worked as a Standard Oil distributor, delivering petroleum products to customers in town and Cummings Valley and Brite Valley, and also with the Tehachapi Parks and Recreation District as a maintenance supervisor. In his younger days, he enjoyed pitching fast pitch softball for the storied Tehachapi town team. He also coached youth baseball and was instrumental in helping develop the first organized Little League teams and fields.

He loved Tehachapi with its cool evening breezes, good water, and friendly people. When traveling, he would frequently bring his own water supply to make his coffee and famous iced tea. He enjoyed keeping his lawns green and his cars well maintained. The New York Yankees were his all time favorite baseball team, and the Tehachapi Warriors were by far his favorite football team. He enjoyed playing cards, dominoes and computer solitaire.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Grantham Sanders; his three children, Timothy Lewis Sanders, Janette Guinn Ashworth, and Judith Ann Houston; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wives, Benetta Guinn Sanders and Lorene Gilreath Sanders; two sisters, Blanche Cecelia Moss and Nancy Nell Dufer; brother, Grady Lee Sanders; and son-in-law, Rick Mills.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Tehachapi Little League, P.O. Box 529, Tehachapi, CA 93581.
