Dennis L. Spencer
1926-2012
Dennis L. Spencer, 86, of Bear Valley Springs passed away on Nov. 17. Dennis was born on March 23, 1926 to K.W. and Jennie Michaelson Spencer in Mason City, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife Lynette, three daughters Marsha Allen, Sharon Heidecker and Kathryn Edmonds of Downey, six grandchildren; Jason and Justin Allen, Andrew and Paul Heidecker and Spencer and Kristen Edmonds and three great-grandchildren Macie, Mason and Maegan Allen.
Growing up in Mason City, Spencer enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII through a program that allowed him an extension to graduate from high school before entering his training, but with the conclusion of the war was never deployed to active duty. His two older brothers Marwood and Melvin served in the Army Air Corps. Melvin spent 18 months in a German Prison Camp after his plane was shot down over Germany.
Following the war Spencer worked for the FBI in Washington D.C. but due to his father's declining health returned to Mason City to assist his mother.
In 1950 Spencer was drafted into the Army's Oklahoma 45th Infantry Division where he served in the Korean War before coming to Southern California in 1953.
It was there he met and married Lynette Lyford, his wife of 56 years.
With a BS in Business Administration, Spencer began his hospital work at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City in 1965 where he was hired on as office manager before becoming the assistant administrator.
From there he went to Cedars Sinai Medical Center then to the City of Hope in Duarte, for 17 years.
His last 10 years of employment were at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., were he worked as a financial consultant.
While in Reno he was asked to join the Gideons International, a non-profit organization that places Bibles in hotels, motels, hospitals, doctor's offices, and schools throughout the world. He considered this to be an honor that was very dear to his heart.
In 1996 Spencer and Lynette moved to Bear Valley Springs and although they were making plans to move to a warmer winter climate and closer medical facilities, Spencer did not want to leave Bear Valley.
A sister Darlene Gildner of Chino and brother Melvin of Oklahoma City, OK survive Spencer. He was preceded in death by sister Ramona Jorgenson and brother Marwood.
A memorial service was held on Friday, Nov. 30. A second memorial service will be held at Light & Life Church in Downey on Dec. 8, the church Spencer attended with his wife and children.
