George ran a sawmill in Portland, Tennessee. He was married to Josephine Fuller. The couple had at least nine children. His great nephew, Flavil Odell Gregory, said they had a nice upright grave marker but it is now totally missing and they have no marker. Their daughter, Nina Gregory Meador Pierce, was founder of the Emmanuel Church of Christ (Pentecostal Denomination). Great- Nephew, Flavil Gregory, also recalled once a customer of George's at the sawmill demanded the slats back. George told him it was understood he always kept the slats. The argument got so heated that the customer choked George around the neck with both hands and lifted him off the ground. George drew a knife from his sheath and stabbed the man in the leg whereupon he was dropped to the ground. George was arrested but released later that day and never tried as witness reports corroborated George's story.
