Mrs. Averitt was born in Fayetteville in 1918. She lived several years in Hoke County. At age 15, she married Johnnie William Sports. There were four children born of that marriage. For the majority of their marriage, they lived in east Lumberton on Dresdon Avenue. In 1952, the family moved to Fayetteville, where she lived the rest of her life. Mrs. Averitt had several different careers. She was first a homemaker. During the Depression, she worked in a WPA sewing room. After World War II she worked in a textile mill in Bladenboro. After moving to Fayetteville, she worked at the Trailways bus station until graduating from Worth's Business School. After working for a brief period as a bookkeeper for Gulf Oil Co., she worked for The Fayetteville Observer as a route supervisor. At one time, she ran the largest paper route the Observer had, delivering 875 daily papers and over 1,000 papers on Saturday and Sunday. She managed the route for 33 years. In 1961, Dorothy and Johnnie divorced. Eight years later, she married Jack Averitt. The two worked together on the paper route until they retired in 1992. Mr. Averitt passed away Sept. 5, 2008, and now Mrs. Averitt has gone on to meet him in Heaven. She always said, "If Jack Averitt doesn't go to Heaven, God is going to miss a good angel." Mrs. Averitt was preceded in death by her parents, George Bryant and Mary Davis Graham. She was one of 16 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Graham. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Eula Pate, Sadie Tyler, Mamie Phillips and Cathleen Marx; and brothers, Starr, Woodrow, Paul, W.D., George Jr., Richard and Charles. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, John Pershing "Jack" Averitt; three of her children, Shirley Levi; John Sports and George Sports; and grandchildren, Diane Levi McDonald, Stacy Sports Gill, Christopher Gill and Janice Nicole Fearing.
