Shelbina, MO--The family of Dorothea Geraldine Gilstrap Cullers Davis, 92, is saddened to announce her death on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at the Salt River Nursing Home in Shelbina. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Kenneth C. Cullers; her son, Ronald K. Cullers; and her sister, Martha Jane Gilstrap Gough. Gerri was born Sept. 26, 1916, to Tolman L. and Anna Halliburton Gilstrap of Macon. Gerri attended Shelbina High School and Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill. Gerri married Ken Cullers in 1939 in Shelbina. Gerri and Ken had two sons, Ronald K. (Ron) and Richard L. (Rick) Cullers. Ken died of tuberculosis in 1946. Ron was a U.S. Marine Corps officer, killed in action in Vietnam in 1966. Gerri married J.D. Davis in 1955 in Mexico, Mo. They had a daughter, Cynthia K. (Cindy) Davis. They were married 53 years and J.D.?s commitment to Gerri was well known and respected. They were partners in the Davis Funeral Home for 22 years.
Gerri was survived by her devoted husband, J.D.; son, Rick and his wife, Jeanne, of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Cindy; and honorary daughter, Sue, of Plano, Texas; her grandchildren, Ronald D. Cullers and his wife, Leslie, and her great-grandson, Dylan; her granddaughter, Torie and her fiance, Tony Cubbage, all of Austin, Texas. She was also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gerri had a life of great joys and sorrows. Her faith was strong throughout her life, and it supported her through the tragic loss of her first husband and her son. She never failed to have a smile in addition to a sparkle in her eyes at the sight of her family and friends. We would like to thank the community of family and friends for the love and support you have given Gerri and J.D., especially through the last few years of Gerri's life. The last three and a half years of her life were spent at the Salt River Nursing Home, and the family would like to extend warm thanks for the compassionate care and treatment she received. Visitation will be at Gerri's beloved Shelbina United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. A celebration of her life will follow visitation, conducted by the Rev. Virgil Clow, followed by a private family graveside service. Gerri will be buried at the Shelbina Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Shelby County Senior Center, Salt River Nursing Home, Shelbina Lakeside Golf Course or a charity of your choice. Agnew Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
