Mentioned in Mothers Will of 1895 to share equally with brother Allan T and his neice, Josephine Edwin Morris. However died before his mother.

In March 1900 was among group of men hunting for escaped convict and alledged murderer and thief in Greensville Co. Va. On March 22 John, Joseph Welton, and J.E. Morris discovered Walter Cotton and Dave O'Grady in a shack near Skippers, VA and a shootout ensued. Mr. Cotton was wounded but managed to kill Welton and John W. Saunders. After the shooting Cotton and O'Grady were captured 2 days later and were taken by force when 1500 citizens met in the Courthouse yard. The angry mob lynched Cotton and O'Grady from a cherry tree in the Courthouse yard. This incident was recorded in book HISTORY OF GREENSVILLE COUNTY, VA.
John William Saunders was buried in Zion Baptist Cemetery in front of his Fathers tombstone and his mother was buried beside his father 2 months later. Inscription on tombstone says Co.H. 13 VA CAV. CSA
