Shawn Paul Riley, the 8year-old son of California City Mayor and Mrs. James Riley; was drowned last Saturday morning after falling through the ice of a pond about 1 1/2 miles west of his home.
California City police officers were summoned by a California City resident that heard a cry for help over a 2 way radio. When the officers arrived on the scene, members of the family had already pulled the boy out of the pond, but attempts by fire and police departments failed to revive him. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Mojave Medical Clinic.
Initial investigation by officers indicated that the boy and an older brother, Tim, 10, were throwing objects into the pond in an attempt to break the ice. Shawn walked out onto the ice and fell through, Tim tried to rescue his brother by inching a board onto the ice, but he too fell through, but into shallower water, and managed to get out. He then ran back to his home to alert other members of the family of the emergency.
The case has been turned over to the county coroner's office for further investigation.

The,Rev. Father James Maloney led the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Jan. 11, and the Mass a at 10:00 a.m, on Tues., Jan.
12 1971.Shawn was born on October 8, 1962 in Lancaster, and was a 3rd grade student at the Robt. P. Ulrich School in California City. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mojave Medical Clinic on January 9, 1971, after he had fallen into an ice-filled pond 1 1/2 miles west of his home at 5000 Galileo Park.
He is survived by his parents at the home; his brothers, James, David, Michael, Matthew, Terrance, Timothy, and Christopher,all at the home; his sisters, Regina Hibbs, Ridgecrest, Cal., Kathleen and Suzanne, both at the home. Also, surviving are his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Riley, Long Beach, Cal., Mrs. Gladys Little, Sacramento, Cal., and Mr. Leslie Pike, in Connecticut.
The family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shawn P. Riley Memorial Library Fund at the California City Republic Bank. Interment was in the Mojave cemetery.
