Mary Langton Smith Bankhead died July 30, 2010, in Provo, Utah.

She was born on February 12, 1920, in Smithfield, Utah, to Lewis Calder and Veda Chambers Smith. Mary attended public schools in Smithfield and graduated from Utah State University with a B.S. in foods and nutrition.

She married Reid E. Bankhead on October 16, 1943, in the Logan Temple. They were the parents of eight children. Mary was a very accomplished homemaker, and taught her children by example the virtues of hard work, doing things well, and ministering to the needs of family members, friends and neighbors.

She made and kept friendships no matter where she lived, and was still involved in several groups she had belonged to for over 50 years. Mary was an active member of the L.D.S. Church and had a strong and enduring testimony of Jesus Christ, the Book of Mormon and the Latter-day Restoration.

She loved music, played the violin, and sang in many choirs and other groups. Mary gave much of herself in service during her lifetime, including teaching and leadership roles in the Relief Society and Primary. She served with her husband when he was President of the Cumorah Mission, and as a member of the LDS Primary General Board.

Mary is survived by the following children; Susan (Douglas) Morrison; Steven; Laurie (Gaylord, dec.) Swim; Lisa (David, dec.) Clark; Lewis (Jann); Tom (Michelle); and Tami (Darrel) Jensen. She is also survived by her sister, Dona Holdsworth, her sister-in-law, Cleo Smith, and by 40 grandchildren and 48 great-grand children.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 2003; her brother, Lewis Smith; her son, John; and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at the LDS Pleasant View Chapel, 650 Stadium Avenue, Provo, at 12:00 noon Wed., August 4th. A viewing will be held at the church prior to services, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
