Emma attended the Summit Country School near Oak.
December 24, 1938, Emma married John Burd at Nelson, Nebraska, and they moved from Nelson to Hebron in the Spring of 1947.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hebron, but had little time for other activities because of her devotion to her family and the need for her to work.
She worked alongside her husband rearing their family, working days, nights and weekends, trying to keep ends meeting. When John couldn't work any longer, Emma took over and worked even harder. She worked at the old Hotel Hebron and would take in laundry and ironing in her spare time. Later Emma worked for the Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron, where she was still employed at the time of her death. She was a familiar sight in Hebron and many will remember her walking to work. She was an unselfish person, always ready to help others but reluctant to put anyone else out, always thinking of the other person first.
She loved her grandchildren and was very proud of them. Her joy was to be there when they performed in sports or school and Emma was always willing to babysit the grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, a brother, Herman Bonin, and a son-in-law, Lee Burkey.
Survivors include her husband, John; three daughters, Mrs. Dale (Rose) Gaston of Hebron, Mrs. Robert (Della) Bachle of Alexandria and Mrs. Kenneth (Jean) Kutcher of Belvidere; two sons, John and Lyle, both of Hebron; 18 grandchildren; one sister, Lydia Garries of Hebron; and two brothers, William Bonin of Oak and Edward Bonin of Carleton.
Funeral services were held February 12, at 10 a.m., from the First Presbyterian Church in Hebron, with Rev. Rob Craig officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Hebron. Adams-Tibbetts Funeral Home of Hebron was in charge of the arrangements.
