He was a revolutionary, Bolshevik, Soviet party and state leader, born into a family of a village priest-teachers. He studied at Nezhin religious school, then, in 1894, in Chernihiv Seminary. In 1901, expelled from it for participation in the revolutionary movement. In 1901 he joined the RSDLP. In 1901-1905 he studied at the Demidov Lyceum in Yaroslavl. After the 2nd Party Congress joined the Bolsheviks. In 1904-1905 the Bolshevik student committee chairman and member of the Northern Committee of the RSDLP. In 1905 he was one of the leaders of the strike and the Textile Council of Workers' Deputies in Ivanovo-Voznesensk. He organizer fighting squads working Yaroslavl. During one of the clashes was injured. In 1906-1907 he served in exile in Germany and Switzerland. Back in 1907 in Russia, worked in St. Petersburg and then in Kostroma and the Baku Bolshevik organization. In 1907-1908 he was a leader of the legal partizdatelstva "Grain" in St. Petersburg. In 1910-1914 he participated in the organization and publication of the newspaper "The Star" and "Truth". In 1915-1916 editor of "insurance issues", a member of the Finance Committee of the Russian Bureau of the Central Committee of the RSDLP. In November 1916 he was arrested in February 1917 he was sentenced to exile in Siberia, but was released during the February Revolution. He was a member of the Petrograd Committee of the RSDLP, and Member of the Petrograd Soviet, the head of the Military Organization of the Petrograd Committee of the Bolsheviks, organized detachments of the Red Guard. Editor of "Soldier's Truth", "The Worker and Soldier", "Soldier". Chairman of the All-Russian Bureau of the front and rear of the military organizations of the Central Committee of the RSDLP. One of the organizers of the October Revolution , a member of the Military Revolutionary Committee , its Bureau and operational triple to lead the October armed uprising , and in the days of the uprising - Deputy Chairman of the Military Revolutionary Committee and one of the leaders of the storming of the Winter Palace During the liquidation of Kerensky-Krasnov uprising commander of the Petrograd military district. In November 1917 - March 1918, People's Commissar for Military Affairs of the Russian Federation.
