Hershell E. Streit was born July 19, 1920, in Sylacauga, Alabama and moved to Florida in 1928. His family moved to Gainesville in 1933 where his mother ran a boarding house on University Avenue. He joined the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corp, where he flew 25 missions over Germany during October 1943 to March 1944. He opened Streit's Bike Shop in 1947 and in 1955 married Jeanne Hill. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne, and son, Peter John. He is survived by his daughters Kay Webb (husband Jim) and Kim Streit (husband Steve Lauer) and two grandsons, Kyle and Garrett Webb. He loved bicycles, fishing, building stuff and Gator sports. He was an active member of Covenant Church. He was proud of his service in World War II and proud that he was able to ride his bicycle 86 miles on his 86th birthday. He was a wonderful father and friend to many. He will be dearly missed. Funeral services were held February 18 at Milam Funeral Home chapel with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville.
