Melvin L. Kirby, 66, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1995 at Putnam Community Hospital.
He was born in Quebeck, Tenn. He had lived in Satsuma since 1974. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having retired after 27 years with the rank of E-7. His service included two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He was a volunteer firefighter for 20 years, served as fire chief for 19 years for the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department in Satsuma.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Thelma C. Kirby of Satsuma; two sons, Melvin E. Kirby of Salem, Va., Gilbert L. Kirby of Satsuma; daughter, Belinda Steybe of Satsuma; two brothers, Elmer Kirby of Sparta, Tenn. and Smithy Kirby of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Inez Bean of Knoxville, Tenn. and Dorothy White of Mississippi; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Watts Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Rabun officiating. Burial will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens. (Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd 13 Jan 1995.)
