Nowell H. Stanton, Sr., age 96, died Wednesday, January 23, 1991 at Rolling Hills Nursing Home at Sparta, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 25 at 1:30 pm from Port-Axtell Funeral Home in Portage. Rev. George Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at Poynette. Friends may call at the Port-Axtell Funeral Home on Thursday, January 24, from 5-8pm and on Friday until the time of funeral services. Nowell Hill Stanton, Sr., was born June 12, 1894 at Poynette, Wisconsin. To Thomas and Mary (Hill) Stanton. He graduated from Poynette High School and attended Madison Business College. On June 25, 1918 he was united in marriage with Eleanor Schwantz who preceded him in death in 1954. On February 2, 1955 he was united in marriage with Beulah Johnson who preceded him in death in 1974. Mr. Stanton had been a salesman and cab driver for the City Cab Company of Madison. He had been a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Odd Fellows Lodges, and was still active in the Odd Fellows good Samaritan Club. Surviving are five children, Mary Barton of Portage, John (Beverly) Stanton of Madison, Carl Stanton of Butte Falls, Oregon, Nowell (Doris) Stanton, Jr. of Portage, David (Alberta) Stanton of Kenosha; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 6 Great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Stanton was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ethel Siedschlag and Nina Cravens; and a grandson.
