Sylvia is survived by one son, Clyde Johnston and wife, Suzanna of Hilton Head, SC; five daughters, Jackie Fearing and husband, Charlie of Kill Devil Hills, Cheryl "Poogie" Johnson of Manteo, Karen "Spooky" Phillips and husband, Alan of Wilmington, Sibbie Griggs and husband, Eddie of Point Harbor, and Cathy Forbes and husband, Foster of Kitty Hawk; eleven grandchildren, MacKenzie Johnston, Victoria Johnston, Rebecca Johnston, Erin Johnson, Shea Johnson, Jonathan Daniels and wife, Betty Lou, Leigh Griggs, Laura Griggs, Walker Griggs, Ashley Forbes and Shannon Forbes; three great-grandchildren, Grayson Rippons, Megan Daniels, and Ava Daniels; and a very special cousin, George Porter Kennington of Anderson, SC.
Sylvia met her husband Johnny while attending Wake Forest College. Both were graduates of Wake Forest College. They moved to the Outer Banks in 1970 when Johnny became the first golf professional at Sea Scape Golf Course. Sylvia returned to the Outer Banks several years ago and resided at Spring Arbor prior to her death where she had many friends.
A graveside service will be held in Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk, on Monday, August 6, 2012 at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends at the home of Eddie & Sibbie Griggs in Point Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dare Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954 or to a charity of one's choice.
