Soviet sculptor, muralist, teacher and professor, Real name Grishin. Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1949, President, 1968- 1983). People's Artist of the USSR (1960). Hero of Socialist Labor (1970). Winner of Lenin (1972), five of Stalin (1941, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1952), and the USSR State Prizes (1979). During World War II, he was in the siege of Leningrad, and was active in making camouflage works, aimed not only at defensive purposes, but also to save the cultural heritage of the besieged city.
