Chrystal Maxine Hayes, 89, of Pleasant Hill, was born Tuesday, November 20, 1923, in Peabody, Kansas, the daughter of Roy and Mary Amanda (Wilson) Farr. She departed this life at 7:30 pm, Thursday, February 14, 2013, at the Kansas City Hospice House surrounded with love and family.

Chrystal was a 1941, Freeman High School Graduate. She attended Central Missouri State Teachers College and Central Business College in Kansas City.

On November 21, 1942, she was united in marriage to Melvin Jay Hayes in Marietta, Oklahoma. They spent the next 70 years devoted to each other and set a tremendous example of patience, understanding and true love. Jay preceded her in death eight months earlier on June 16, 2012.

Chrystal was a faithful member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities. Chrystal and Jay served as sponsors for Intermediate and High School MYF for many years and touched the lives of so many Pleasant Hill Youth. Chrystal was a leader of numerous committees, served on countless boards and was a key supporter of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Church dinners wouldn't have been the same without her "special rolls".

Chrystal was one of the founding members of the first Parent Teacher Association in Pleasant Hill and served as President for a number of years. She was a 50 Year Member of Ivy Leaf Chapter #215 O.E.S. and a Charter member of Pleasant Hill Lioness Club. Chrystal was a homemaker and worked with Jay in the family business for nearly 30 years.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, James Cleveland and one brother Donald Farr.

She is survived by one son Terry (and Joy) Hayes of Pleasant Hill; two daughters Jaylene (and Al) Graham of Pleasant Hill, and Tracy (and Ron) Baker of Lee's Summit; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three brothers Wilson LeRoy "Dick" (and Mary Lou) Farr and Robert (and Maxine) Farr both of Harrisonville, and Dale (and Donna Sue) Farr of Freeman; one sister Charlene (and Cledys) Atwater of Osawatomie; one sister-in-law Joyce Farr of Harrisonville; other relatives;and many friends.

Chrystal was a one of a kind mom, grandma and grammie and often called her little ones the "apple of my eye". Family meant everything to Chrystal and Chrystal meant everything to her family,

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Reverend Carl Knapp minister of the church will officiate.

Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Casket bearers are Bob Crawford, Josh Crouch, Clint Hayes, Brad Hocker, Clay Hocker, Matt Hocker, Mike Rooney, and John Simsheuser.
