Edwin C. Hart
(February 12, 1924 - January 29, 2013)

Edwin C Hart passed away at his home in Little Shasta, on January 29th, 2013.

Born February 12, 1924, Ed was the fourth generation born to the pioneer Hart family. Growing up on his beloved Hart Ranch, he graduated from Yreka High School in 1942 and went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley graduating with a degree in agricultural economics in 1949 after serving with the Army in Europe during World War II.

Returning to the ranch in 1950, he joined the family ranching business. Through the years Ed served as state director and local president of the California Cattlemen's association, receiving the honor of Siskiyou Cattleman of the Year in 1985. His expertise led him to numerous judging assignments including the Cal Poly Test Bull Sale, the Grand Nationals at the Cow Palace as well as twenty two years as a judge at the Klamath Bull Sale.

Ed loved nothing better than to be out on the ranch horseback with his cattle. He could be found ‘cleaning up the drag' on the Hart annual two-day, thirty mile cattle drive to their mountain property, and marked his 71st drive in 2005. He loved his Cal Bears and followed his team game by game throughout the years.

Ed is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Blair and Susan Hart of Little Shasta, his daughter Laura Hyde of Albany, Oregon, his grand daughter, Alexandra Hart of Lexington, KY, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his wife Betty in 2011, his sister Isabel Hart (Piemme) in 1968 and brother Raymond John Hart in 1940.

At his request, no services will be held; his advice, "Hold onto your reins!" Remembrances may be directed to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097 or the Andy Peek Memorial Scholarship, c/o Shasta Livestock, P.O. Box 558, Cottonwood, CA 96022.
