Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 13th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on July 28, 1862, and was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company F on August 25, 1862. During the September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam, Maryland, he was severely wounded in action, which faciliated his hospitalization at the Discharged at United States Army General Hospital in Frederick, Maryland. His wounds were such that on November 26, 1862 he was discharged due to disability there. His wounds eventually caused his passing 5 years later. He is buried with his two brothers, Captain Henry H. Callen of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry (KIA in the Battle of the Wilderness) and Private Luther Callen of the 26th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry.
