Derrick Paul Murphy, 17, of Kingland, passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, as the result of an accident.

The Georgia State Patrol said Derrick Murphy was riding his bicycle (Later learned he was walking) on Greenville Road just after 7 p.m. when he was struck by a Honda Accord driven by Curtis David Powers III of St. Marys. Investigators said Powers was passing a truck when he struck Murphy head on.

Murphy was taken by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Powers was treated and released for minor injuries at Camden Medical Center.
GSP Trooper Jason Boyet said Powers' Accord had no tag and was unregistered.

Derrick was born Feb. 11, 1987, in Savannah, ga., Mr. Murphy had resided in Camden County for the past five years. he graduated from Camden County High School in 2004, was a member of SkillsUSA for the past four years and placed second out of five students in Power Equipment Technology Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Super Skills Saturday event; and was a member of the Vicar Club and Browntown Baptist Church.

Those who knew him said he was a hard worker and dedicated student. He worked in the school lunchroom on a work study program one period each day.

Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Betty Chapman and Nancy Dempsey, and a sister, Christina Turner.

He is survived by his parents, Ann Marie Murphy and Jerry Dempsey of Kingsland; siblings Joseph Sikes of Riedsville, Jerry Dempsey Jr., Shelly Dempsey and Sabrina Dempsey of Kingsland and Brian Dempsey of Nahunta; grandparents Paul and Kathy Murphy of Folkston and Charles Dempsey of Kingsland.
